High Socks New Jersey 1950 by Paula Lawrie. $30. 9 x 11, perfect bound, 70 pages, greyscale printed in color. Published by Marvin gardens/Pacific.

Made into an artist’s book in collaboration with Pacific, this suite of 36 beautifully inventive narrative drawings detail a short story of a young girl living in New Jersey in the 1950’s and her encounters with anti-Semitism. This is one of the first comics made by Lawrie, and her natural storytelling ability present this emotionally complicated story with a directness that is original and powerful. Highest possible recommendation.
