Maelstrom by Céline Hudréaux, $32. Oversize, 100 pages, black and white. Published by Bries.
The Maelström is an infamous vortex south of the Norwegian Lofoten Islands. This vortex inspired Edgar Allan Poe to write his short story 'A Descent into the Maelström'. It's a story about a seemingly old man who narrates how he and his two brothers were swept away by the Maelström. Only the narrator survived. Huréaux recreates the story, turning it into a poetic, visual narrative. No text, aside from a Dutch afterword, but an English transcript is provided.
