Skull Comics #5 edited by Gary Arlington, $25. Comic book size, 32 pages, color cover, black and white interiors. Published by Rip Off Press, 1972
In my opinion, one of the most solid underground series. The underground guys, in my mind, are most comfortable (and at their most artistic) when working in genre, especially EC style genre. Horror comics, with the lurid sex and violence dial turned way up, is what this comic offers and it feels like a 50s horror comic book that is actually reprehensible. I think underground artists work best when working with a lot of structure, and the stories here are dense. Lots to read, all of it genuinely unsettling. Classic stories in this issue from tons of underground stars: Spain, Deitch, Jaxon, etc.
